Making 2.5" Unfinished HST from a Jelly Roll

My First Jelly Roll Quilt: Date Unknown

The first jelly roll I purchased many years ago was "Saltwater" from Tula Pink. I fell in love with the "octopuses". (Check here if you use another form for the plural.) There is a seriously cute factor to the faces in her prints. I snapped up a jelly roll in the line, and set to making an easy quilt. I imagine this was among my first 5 so you know it's old!

'My Life Aquiltic' and Pet Project Show #17

I'm resisting the urge to say, "Ta-Dah!" It
happens every time I finish a quilt, and I'm
not sure why. It's not very mature, but...

"Ta-Dah!"

"My Live Aquiltic" is completed, and I can
knock it off my list for an On the Windy Side
Finish-Q2, too. It finished at about 51"x62",
and I used a loose FMQ motif that reminded
me of wave action. I used my Janome
domestic machine, and Iris thread.
Other details are in these posts.

I added a 'column of water' to the solid backing
made from pieced scraps leftover from the top.
I curved a crest and trough for fun.

I had just enough extra backing left with which
to bind it. No more than 2 extra inches to spare
this time. Besides making sure I estimate more
yardage for my backing next time, here are
a few things I learned along the way.

How to fix a thread break: Take it back
to the last change of direction to tie it off and
bury the threads, and then start the FMQ there.
I marked a point I thought would be good,
then I used a ripper to cut the other threads.
Don't spend your time fussing with anything
other than what you need to tie off. In this
case my thread broke again, so I had to go
back even further.

Usually the rubber end of a ripper will do a better
job of getting the last thread pieces than
scratching at them with your fingernail.

Burying your thread right then and there gives
you a better chance of the new start blending in.

I learned that by taking your FMQ off the edge of
quilt helps to anchor the edges. This makes
binding much easier and quicker.

Spring is in full swing with bushes and trees
both coming out in leaf. The other side of
this wall is where my Clematis paniculata
is rooted. I was late cutting it back, and
just got to it early this week. I was nearly
done when I saw there was a nest full of
eggs in last year's vines. I was crushed, but I
took the whole nest and reset it in the
vines I had left.

When I checked on it this morning, the mama
bird flew into a nearby bush.
She was still brooding!

There's just about a week left before the
drawing for this pillow. If you've linked up

Pet Project Show #13

My Life Aquiltic
A very modern looking pieced back using my
remnants. I envision a column of ocean water
with a small wave swell on top.

I spent yesterday sewing alongside my mom.
She worked on her Little Dresses for Africa, and
I finished this quilt top. (Aren't we lucky?)
This will be another Pie Quilt.

I had to snap these pictures late yesterday
afternoon before I lost the light. I wanted
you to have a realistic idea of how relaxed
I am when making a quilt sandwich. I've
had some shifting in the back while moving
it around so I'll need to fix that before
I actually start FMQ. I'm also adding
just a little more length to the ends,
to ensure I don't run out of backing
while quilting. You will get shrinkage.

I'm off taking a class today in creating a
landscape quilt. It's offered through my new
and sounded too interesting to pass up.
Besides, I've made some good friends there
already, and they're coming. Quilting is a
social hobby if you want it to be.

This was last Saturday at Heritage Arts Days.
How can you not smile when you're
sewing among friends?

Where the Rubber Meets the Road (A.K.A. Machine Quilting)

I have a friend who loves this saying, and for the longest time I didn't really get it. So, what does this mean exactly?

It's an idiom--like, "It's raining cats and dogs." It doesn't count to just spin your tires. You have to really drive somewhere. Well, I'm there today with one of my projects. I finished this quilt top a few months ago, and it's one I'm making for me this time. I played with some fabric and color I wouldn't normally use together, and  I like the outcome. Let's say time, money, and emotional sacrifice count now. I don't want to screw it up, and I'm not an experienced machine quilter. Hand-quilting would take me too long, so I've got to hunker down and overcome my fear. Hence the saying, "This is where the rubber meets the road."

Try the Jelly Roll-- It's Delicious!

Into the Woods Jelly Roll .
Spend enough time online or in stores hunting fabrics, and sooner or later you're going to wonder what a Jelly Roll is. Simply, it's a one of the many pre-cuts available to quilters. The fabrics are from a designer line, pre-cut in strips 2 1/2" wide. This is from Missouri Quilt Shop, and runs about $36. Expect about 40 strips about 44" long.

I think of Jelly Rolls as I do convenience food. They're handy to have on hand for a quick project when I don't have much time. I also accept the limitations.
