Modern Freefall Quilt Finish

 Freefall Finish

The days have been gentle, and almost slow around here despite Christmas approaching. The major purge is over, and it's become more of a daily maintenance to keep things fresh. There are still small spaces that call for attention, but nothing is screaming. With this steadiness, it is easier to let go. I know they are just things--baggage holding me back from better things to come. I have control of them. Not the other way around anymore. I choose a few spaces each day to stay committed, but I'm back to quilting with new vigor. It's hard to explain how settled I feel, but let's just say it's a cross between relief and curious amazement. It's new found balance I didn't expect.

Quilt-As-You-Go Chinese Coins

Chinese Coins
A Roman Stripe Variation
Also Reminiscent of Amish Bars

Moving right along with the theme of Roman stripe or Chinese coins, and adding a dash of scrappy goodness in both fabric and batting, I whipped up this delicious, little baby quilt! It took only a few days to complete, and not only did I have a top, but a completed quilt using the Quilt-As-You-Go Method.

*In full disclosure, I am using the term loosely as I have never read the actual method, but seen a few You Tube videos using a  similar method. I blended everything I saw with my own ideas, and made it up as I went along. It was far easier to do than I had imagined so if you have time to experiment yourself, I highly recommend it.

Moda Modern Building Blocks Quilt Porn

"Moda Modern in Print"

The Moda Modern Building Blocks came off the frame nearly 2 weeks ago. I needed to assess and mark the areas requiring more quilting, turn it 90 degrees, and put it back on. While it seemed simple, I was researching behind the scenes. I'd run out of my standard blue fabric markers, and was fairly uncertain I wanted more. I'd had a run in with one that refused to come out in this Costa Maya project, and wondered if there was anything new on the market.

Stunning Circle for MQG Pt II Finish

Stunning Circle Quilt
Finish

I had a finish to this project early this week, but time and computer issues prevented me showing it. Part I will take you from the creation of the circle through the applique process, and at that point I kept telling myself to not overthink the quilting.

Bigfoot Sighting In a Beer Mug Rug

Bigfoot Is Real!

One thing I would never have put to my name is a Bigfoot quilt, I thought, but I had a passionate request from someone close to me for a king size quilt with Bigfoot on it. This was a good time for me to practice how to talk someone/something down to size, and we continued until I knew it was manageable during this terribly busy season.

A Discussion About Walking Foot Quilting

Practice Piece On An Orphan Block

Life in a small town can get very busy, and pulls me in harder than I'd like sometimes. The balance between quilting & blogging, and taking care of the every day things is tough. One thing I've found that helps me is having an online Craftsy class to watch in my spare minutes. We all have those dead minutes we're waiting for something, and this keeps my brain engaged about quilting even if life prevents me from actually doing it. I download lessons to my iPhone, and they're ready when I am.

A Soft Finish: E's Hexie Quilted

How I wish you could feel this quilt!

If a finished pieced top is called a 'Flimsy Finish', I think a finished quilted top should aptly be named a 'Soft Finish'. Binding is all that's needed yet here.

Modern Heart Zip Bag

I thought my little orphan block would be
helped by framing. There were some darker strips
that I’d decided were a bit too dark, but that
was after I’d sewn it together.  I think the deep
purple helped the colors pop, and the low
volume background recede.

To give it a little edgier look, I offset the border.
This gave me both a solid color, and larger space
to add some SLQ as an accent, and I had fun.
It’s just a little pattern of crossing lines that
ensures the sandwich is secure.

The backing was a diagonal print to start with,
and I marked every 1/2" with a chalk pencil.
I chose not to quilt every line, though, and
picked a few here and there to keep it random.
I used Aurifil #2309, my go-to
off-white quilting thread in 50 wt.

I used a little contrasting fabric on each end of my
zipper to get a good fit. I always use nylon zippers
with bags! Metal zippers look very cool and hip,
but those teeth can destroy your manicure in
a heartbeat when you’re trying to get in and
out of a bag--not that I have a mani, you know.

I chose to sew down the zipper on the inside
instead of finishing all the edges. Just the
tiniest bit showed out from underneath.

The backing is a diagonal print from the ‘Elementary’
line from ‘Moda’. I like how it helps the bag
from looking ‘too cute’.

I sewed front and back pieces wrong sides together
in a scant ¼" seam. Then I added a Anna Marie
Horner floral binding. It created contrast on the
back, and picked up the heart fabrics in the front.

Tah-dah!
I wonder what I should do with it now?

I'm thankful for the rains this spring,
and our beautiful show of blooms.
The azaleas are in full bloom now,
and I'm awaiting my pink poppies.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go outside and enjoy the sunshine
until the mosquitoes eat us up!
