Mermaid Baby One Patch Quilt

"Mermaids & Seahorses, Oh, My!"

Way back in January I ran a post called 27 Quilt Finishes in 2017. I spoke up for fewer commitments to free myself up. This has been good. I've really plowed through my Pile of Unloved Projects. I would say half are done. That gets a quiet little woohoo from me to myself. I'm staying on track with my goals.

I also said, "Make what you love, and use what you have." So in the midst of pulling out fabric for my last class, Chain Piecing & Webbing, I happened upon this piece of mermaid fabric, and a bit of Mendocino seahorses. Not from the same designer or even stylized the same, but I still liked them together. Golly, I don't think any fabrics in this quilt came from the same company let alone designer, but the variety was interesting.

I wanted to show how my method would work for any size one patch square so I put up a quick baby quilt to demonstrate. Can you see it started down there on the end?

These fabrics just shouted "Summer vacation," and, "Take me to the beach!" The aqua/green stripe was another seahorse version on my shelf wanting to be added to a quilt.

I had leftover squares from my top that extended my seahorse fabric just wide enough to become a perfect backing width. When adding a pieced strip to my backings, I go 1/3 + 2/3. (I love-love pieced backings!)

And to keep the beach theme really fun while echoing all the rounded shapes, I pulled out my clam shell ruler and bright orange thread. This quilt would be no wallflower!

It's going swimmingly! Image result for winking emoji face

Watch for this 40" x 45" baby quilt for sale here on Pink Doxies by next week.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

Half done with your PUPs and it isn't even June. Wow! Lovely baby quilt, Julie. I, too, like pieced backs.

I love the make what you love and use what you have concept. I've been seeing that come up in quite a few blogs lately. People who have been hoarding beautiful fabric that they love but are feeling the need to actually use it in something. Or . . . people who have a lot of fabric because it was such a great deal with no real purpose for it. I think I fit into both those categories. I love your adoption of a common photography rule (the rule of thirds) for the pieced backs. It really works! I think it looks really good.

That's adorable! I'm trying to use what I have this year, too. It's fun making something out of "nothing"!
