One Patch Charity Quilts: July

Charity Quilts: July

There was a time when much of my quilting time was devoted to charity quilts. I've taken a more modified approach now, and I work as I both see need, and notice my scrap piles growing. Sometimes I get a bag of donated fabrics, and they may not fit my style. If I'm not going to use it, someone else may as well. The most rewarding quilts to make, though, are for children as these were.

The request was for local student-age children with mental and or physical disabilities. The kids would receive the quilts from a local teacher who focused on classes one at a time until the needs at one school were met. Then she moved on to another.

Each of these quilts is a one patch. One block, a square, makes the entire quilt. The design is the focus, and the fabric is secondary. Many of the fabrics are included only according to color or value, but I always try to include a theme of some sort. The first has a lot of purple, the second focuses on fish, and the third, which was photographed on its side, is of a pastoral home scene.

All these quilts were super fast to piece as I cut with my Accuquilt 5" die, laid out the design, and marked the rows. Then I gathered up the rows and set aside to chain piece it when I needed a mindless project. Here are some links to give you more inspiration.

And finally the last one which seemed too juvenile for the requested age groups when it was finished. Sweet and vibrant, that one is waiting on my binding pile for a younger child.

Fall is a perfect time to review your quilting goals, and if you can squeeze in a charity quilt a few times a year it adds up. Do it with a good heart, and infuse the quilt with positive thoughts and prayers if you choose. As they say, it does a body good.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.
