A Two Quilt Tuesday

Cabin Under the Stars: Quilt No. 1

Yesterday was Monday, and it felt like a typical Monday for me in spite of the ice and snow storm. I am a self-proclaimed Monday Lover because it is the day of new starts, and I get so much done!

Starting mid-morning, I had all but a couple of these stars done before I went home for lunch. By 2:00 that afternoon, this sweet thing was sewn together.

Some little details: The fabric is beach-themed. Swimmers, sling chairs, umbrellas, flamingos, and so one. I'll show you more when I quilt it, but this piece has been fun to work with.

The fabric wasn't pre-washed. That's really unusual for me, but I bought it on vacation, and set right to sewing. I didn't notice any difference in working with it, but it's not something I would do normally. All the other fabric in my studio is pre-washed so I chose not to mix them.

The finished top is just under 40" x 40".

I had a few more hours I could sew so sew I did.

This book, and particularly this quilt have been on my mind for a few years. I just wanted to make it to see if it was as easy as it seemed.

Baby Churn Dash from Stash: Quilt No. 2

I mixed April Showers and Bee My Honey fabric lines together. I wanted an eclectic mixture of prints to use for several gift quilts, and had enough overall yardage for 2 or maybe 3. The pattern calls for a border around the entire quilt of the same fabric, but I thought this large print would be a poor choice for it. I may just leave it the size it is.

Squaring Up & Trimming Blocks

Another FYI is hindsight on my part. I should have been more particular about trimming the large HSTs exactly. In other words, I'm going to just slightly lose a few of the points when I bind it. On one hand, it's a baby quilt. Chances are a little person will eat, play, and sleep on it without regard that I chopped off a point of the churn dash. Meh. In my own opinion, I have done enough of these I should have known better. Next time I'll remember.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

Both quilts are so cute. Did I read right on that page for the second quilt - it's 48" x 48" . If so that's my kind of quilt - a whole quilt from one block. If not, I can see it as 30 by 30 - my size for a preemie quilt.

It's good to see the sewing mojo returned to full strength. Your beach quilt turned out beautifully. Congrats on having two finished flimsies before we even hit the halfway point of the month.

Love the beach quilt! Two tops, Mondays really are your day.

Both quilts are very fresh. Hard to think beach right now. Everything is very neutral here- but I do love the variety and richness of the neutrals in trees, grasses, rocks. Dirty snowbanks, not so much.
Precision trimming is something I have invested some time in last year and now it is not so painful, but part of the process. Not that my work is perfectly matched. There are enough variables in my work that I just try and eliminate one of them and trim each step.

I like that word, "Meh!". Certainly appropriate for those points. Nice productive Monday you had - I like Mondays too, for that same reason. Fresh starts!

I remember when that book came out--I was interested but it never made it to my bookshelf. What's your final verdict?

Truthfully, I got it when it came out, and refer to it often. Not so much for the patterns so far, but I like the visual simplicity of the long arm motifs used throughout. It’s one thing to see something on Pinterest or in a book, but to a good design on a quilt you would make personally is really helpful. I think this may be the second pattern I’ve used from the book now, and both have been straightforward and well written. It’s on my main shelf so a keep in my opinion.

Wow! I wish I had your stamina and could Sew all day long. It really bothers my back, so I have to take lots of breaks. Love both your quilts! Isn’t it fun to finally get around to making something that’s been niggling away at you? Well done!

Julie! That Log Cabin under the Stars quilt is gorgeous!! You are such an inspiration to me. I lose points too. I haven't figured out how to make them stay. Does one plan for it when making the block or is it just plain luck? I still think your clock runs a lot slower than mine as you seem to get so much more done!

You had a very productive start to the week. I love your Cabin under the Stars quilt :)

I'm a sucker for stars anyway, but I just love that Cabin Under the Stars -- so dreamy and restful! The Churn Dash quilt is sweet, too. And yes, we have ALL been there and done that careless trimming point chopping thing. No, the baby will NOT mind!

Oh I love Cabin under the Stars - a gorgeous name for such a pretty quilt!

I really love the Cabin Under the Stars quilt. The random use of fabrics in the cabins gives creates a nice effect against the sameness of the stars! (And you know the baby will do worse on that quilt.....) lol
