Mini Round Robin Round #2

Tish's Beautiful Block!

This is round #2 of our 2016 Round Robin with Sandra of mmm! Quilts, Cindy of Stitchin At Home, myself, and the original creator of this block center, Tish of Tish's Adventures in Wonderland.

If you've missed the original post, jump back there, and do a quick peek at the rules we created. This is all just a fun round robin between blogger friends, and a way to push ourselves.

This was difficult for me to decide how to add to it. I looked at her colors, fabric styles, and construction. The original block was a red center, white border, and another split in black and white.

I decided I needed to continue in similar colors, and keep with her method of construction. But just repeating the same thing in the next row would be too much the same, so I shifted it all 90 degrees. It's great how changing the orientation of this particular block creates a whole new look! I love that about it. I kept with the theme of her Asian inspired prints, and ended my round with a white on white print.

What Should Come Next

It's really interesting to note, but this is my favorite way to actually start an improv quilt. I love building centers, as in a medallion quilt, and grow outward, and think the next round will be much easier. I believe it takes a while to see if the quilt is building continuity--like this one, or the last person took it a whole new direction. Those factors will determine the pattern, and make it far easier to proceed. I hope think this round was the hardest!

Just for Fun!

Patterns are something the brain picks up on, and we have an instinct for different or the same. Have you ever played the card game SET? It's based on recognizing visual attributes to color, pattern, shape, and number. If you're looking for a good game to share with all ages, this is it. You can find it in good toy stores, and Amazon carries it. Also, a daily FREE game is here, and will give you a taste of it. You might wind up a better quilter because of it, too!

The Doxie girls and I are off to bed.
The cabin restoration continues this week,
but I'll be popping in and out.
'Hope you're enjoying your summer!

And, I noticed you pieced it exactly as she did. What attention to detail!

Julie, your addition looks so natural and like it was always there that I was scratching my head trying to figure out what you added! Beautifully done. :)

Gee I seem to be following Yvonne for the Mini Round Robin! And thinking the same things! I had to pull up Tish's block from her post back in May to see what did you DO? So yup, very cohesive addition. Don't think I have any Asian prints in my stash...wonderful that you did and I love that you put it on point.

I absolutely LOVE what you did with my block. After I made the block and it was on it's way to you, I kind of worried, because color wise I was in fear I had backed it into a corner. Heck, I'm not sure where I would have taken it from that point. But you got it. The block was talking and you knew what it wanted. I love that you kept with the Asian prints too. It's perfect!

I love the on-point orientation for this one. Very pretty fabric for a perfect add to the beginning. :)

I am enjoying following all four of you while you work on each others mini quilts. It will be exciting to watch them grow.

LOL - I had the same reaction Yvonne had Julie. Your work makes the block look as if it was planned out this way all along. Beautiful!

Love the colors and the on point orientation really works for this center.

Tish, I'm so glad. It's a bit scary adding to someone else's work, but also liberating. You have to really listen to the first maker with such a small amount of details.

One of my favorite fabric prints this year is the black and white swirls in your block. In fact, I recovered a stool cushion that goes with my grandmother's sewing machine cabinet in a larger print of that pattern. I love it. Rather art deco.
