Rose-Star Block

Rose-Star Hexagon Pattern
Attributed to Alice Brooks, 1949

This was my post-retreat recovery project after everyone had packed up, and the studio was strangely silent without the hum of machines. I like to sew in complete quiet or with just a bit of low music playing. Sewing is my meditation.

The Rose-Star pattern was published in 1949 by Alice Brooks, but many designers have published patterns related to it since. Earlier this year I made a quilt for the MCC charity auction based on this one large block. Check out these posts below for more how-to information.

In-House Custom Quilting on My Avante Longarm by Handiquilter

The kite template by Creative Grids has several sizes within one ruler. The Giant Rose Star above used the largest size, 8.5".  Today's block was made using the 2.5" grid line, and is shown above at 12.5" unfinished.

While the online craze leans heavily toward EPP (English Paper Piecing) for this kind of work, I enjoy machine piecing far more. I can't say one is quicker or more accurate than the other, but machine piecing is more sane for me. I have a request if anyone can help me. Would any of you EPP fans have an idea how long an EPP pieced Rose-Star requires? My inquiring mind would like to know for curiosity's sake.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

Your Rose Star is lovely, Julie, and the quilting on the large version looks great so far! It looks like you are using blue washout marker to mark your ruler lines. Would love to see more of how you mark for ruler work, as that's something I'd like to experiment with more once I wrap up the charity practice quilts and get back to my own projects. Also, sorry I wasn't able to join you all on the retreat, it sounds like it was a wonderful time!

I have that template, but have yet to use it. Seems I spent a few years collecting rulers and templates and will have to play with them some day. Your block and enlarged quilt are both lovely.

A lovely block. I have made this rose with a Marti Michell set of templates. It is also machine pieced. Great job, Julie

Pretty, pretty! Finishes at 12.5? What are your plans for it? Will you be making more? I love how you combine fabrics, Julie!

I have left this blog post up on my computer and keep staring at it. I don't know why this type of piecing seems so hard to me. It is very lovely and has so much authority when pieced so wonderfully.

I'm with you - machine piecing all the way. You're rose star is very pretty. I hope you have something special planned for it.
