Twin Quilts from the Darling 'Clementine' Collection

A Darling Fabric Collection

When the Clementine collection from Heather Bailey came out, I knew I had to have it. It was girly, graphic, folksy, and ageless. In other words, it had great potential as to what I could use it for, and who would like it. Family friends approached me about making matching quilts for 4 year old twins, and I knew right away it was a perfect match. I had met these sweet girls last summer on a walk, and they loved everything about the outdoors, and they loved PINK!

The challenge for me was to design quilts appropriate now for children that would last for many years to come as they grew up. I considered the pattern first. It was necessary to make the blocks large and simple enough to show off the medium to large scale graphics of the collection. And while pink was their favorite color now, (and MINE!), it might not be when they are 7 or 13, and these quilts are still going strong.

I made up some test blocks for the family to see, and I jazzed up the background by throwing in some bright orange, and deeper pink. I think the variety helps out some of the prints that come off as the same value as the background--pale and paler. A little contrast gives each block a pop now.

Once I was sure how the addition of an orange solid would work, I spotted the perfect dotted backing of orange Minky. Little girls love softies, and these quilts will be tactile and plush!

As I was cutting the pieces out, a few prints looked familiar. I had picked up some flat folds apart from buying the fat quarter bundle, and went hunting these hidden in the stacks of my stash. Some were actually from the Clementine collection in another colorway, and another was just a Heather Bailey print. I am definitely not a purist about mixing fabrics, as you might imagine, so these will find their way into the quilts, too. I like the additional contrast.

I have a big job ahead so I am cutting this short. Have fun working outside on these nice days, too. This weather won't last forever.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

What a fun quilt... will they be exactly the same or will they have some differences? (Shoot, it would be really hard for me to make them exactly the same....) Love your color choices though.

I think the color combination is perfect! Orangy, pinky, green...a combination that won't be outgrown ever!!

Look at those perfect geese! And perfect colours together=yum! And Minky. Little girls and this big girl love it as backing. I am sleeping under my Minky-backed Wings quilt these past few days, well, except for the lovely warm ones! Isn't it FABULOUS!! Will be looking forward to seeing these all done. :-)

I always find it a challenge when making a quilt for a wee one or even a baby quilt, because I want the quilt to be classic or rather something that will grow with the individual. I think you are going a great job. These are fabulous prints.

What a fun idea! And a great confirmation for me because I'm considering making twin quilts for a friend of mine! I've been debating the idea, but I think your post "must be a sign" for me to go for it! :) Thank you for sharing!
