While summer officially blows in today with cooler air, I am still trying to beat the heat while working in my second story studio. The pale, blue setting triangles above are getting some free-handed, ferny feathers.
Formerly called Hurricane Stars, this sweet thing is on the long arm. While I take frequent breaks from quilting, I'm finishing up the pattern for it. Check, check, and triple check! It's coming soon, I promise, along with the new name reveal. You will love the easy numbers, detailed instructions, and big dent it takes from your scraps and stash!
I'm using Omni "Bright White", which is a 40 wt. thread from Superior Threads. I've used a single layer of batting only-- since this quilt feels so summery, the thread is adding texture more than stand out quilting. You know, it's either about the quilting or about the quilt for me. One has to be the star, and the other gets a supporting role.
Pesky Corners
The feathers went down so smoothly, but the corners were a different story, and I wanted a chance to explain. Can you see my blue marker drawing above? I drew it freehand, and it's spineless. It has no central leader, but is built one feather/wave/shell on top of the next. The ferny feathers were built on a spine, and in my opinion, easier to construct and quilt. That being said, I wanted something different in the corners, and I went with it.
I should have drawn it more accurately before quilting, and somewhere close to the bottom I got lost. Then my long arm went all cattywonkus, and limped on me because a little bit of lint stuck in a wheel. I moaned. I groaned. I texted. I complained. I walked away for a day. (Looking back now I'm thinking, "It really wasn't ALL that bad, lady.")
The next day I ripped out the offending stitches, and redrew more accurate lines.
And still, it's not perfect, but it's free-hand, and that's what you get. A few lines bounce around, but white thread hides a multitude of quilting sins. Ba-haha-haha!
After all my rants of, "I don't do cute, ya know," I love this! And, it's the epitome of cute.

ReplyDeleteI love the fresh fabrics! Also, your quilting really enhances the quilt. I haven't done anything custom in a while and this makes me need one to do....I'll have to prep one of my own to do this Summer!
ReplyDeleteHi Julie, I love what you did with your corner triangles. I think it might even be manageable on my DSM as long as the triangles aren't too large. BTW, I posted last night a fix for blogger comments that I received from Gayle at Mangofeet blog. It seems to be working for a lot of folks. I've only had one regular commenter whose comment didn't show up in my email, but they never did before the big glitch either.
ReplyDeleteI think your quilt is not only CUTE but also LOVELY!!! There's just something magical about a scrappy quilt that just makes me smile. I'd totally forgotten about your hurricane stars. Great quilting idea and work on those corners. I shall have to wait patiently to read what you renamed it. But it ain't going to be easy.

ReplyDeleteHaha Don't do cute is so funny. Sometimes the quilt just insists though and then what's the quilter to do? This quilt is certainly summery if not cute! I'm not a longarmer, but it's interesting to follow along on your quilting journey's.:)
