Churn Dash II
I had some minor problems with the points when I made the first Churn Dash baby quilt. Check it out along with the book I'm working from in A Two Quilt Tuesday. I needed one more quilt in similar colors so I made another one.
This time I starched the squares before making the large HST, and was very careful while squaring up and trimming them. Once again, it was problematic piecing the giant nine patch. Goodness, you think I would have stopped, ripped, squared the other pieces, and then sewed it together. But, No, I just plowed on. The points aren't cut off as bad as the picture shows above, but one or two will be. I think I need a third try to work this out.

I had similar experiences while piecing the largest blocks of the Moda Modern, but found that heavy starching helped. You can read more about it below as I get to work on the third baby sized Churn Dash, and this time work smarter.

Once a quilt is quilted, washed, and dried, the points are a non issue as fabric is not paper and has dimension when quilted. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

ReplyDeleteI have had the same problem for so long and then just decided to start cutting them an 1/8 inch bigger and then VERY carefully trimming them. Works for me. I LOVE you sampler quilt, the colors are great. I do agree with Linda also.
ReplyDeleteSee now, this is one of the reasons that I don't make many traditional quilts. Points make me crazy! I want them exact but I don't want to put in the work. There's no way I'm going to rip out every mistake!
ReplyDeleteYour sampler has absolutely no indication that you struggled with anything. It's gorgeous! I love your use of color. They are fabulous together.
To Linda's philosophy I will add babies don't really care about points unless they are on diaper pins. Oh wait, people don't even know what diaper pins are today. Geez, can I date myself or what?

ReplyDeleteI didn't know that you had made a Moda Modern Building Blocks sampler! I switched up the color palette and swapped out a few blocks to make my own version and I have made exactly ONE block so far. Um, progress has been slow... But I know what you mean. I would have thought that the bigger the patches, the easier the piecing -- but it's difficult to cut really big pieces accurately, and those long bias edges can be booger for sure! Starch is my BEST FRIEND. That's why the wall behind my ironing board is so sticky. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not really seeing the cut off points, but I know how stuff like that can bother a person. These churn dash baby quilts are such a great pattern for a little quilt. Really enjoyed seeing the different look to each one!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun quilt, Julie. I like how you elongated the sides to make a rectangular churn dash, and I especially like the use of the striped fabric in the 9-patch in the center. For me, cutting and sewing such large pieces and keeping everything flat and "square" would be such a challenge. Even if you're a little short on the triangle points, I'd count this a success.
