Slow Stitching & Heavy Heart

Improv Chinese Coins

It has been a long week or two. Harvey first then Irma on his tail. We have a home on Florida's west coast, and the town and those nearby have evacuated. We survived a direct hit from hurricane Charley 13 years ago, but Irma seems much more wicked. Living in the northern U.S. we don't face the same issues as those who are there full time, but we are sad/afraid/worried for good friends there. I have been watching the storm updates, and stitching out my worries. There is nothing to do until the storm passes through.

Two muted colors were chosen for the border finally. I tried this over and under pattern to see if I could develop the look of a basket weave. The edges all seemed quite full before I started the stitching, but the many stitches have taken up the bulk nicely.

If this was entered in an art quilt show, the neatness of the backing would not be an issue. In a regular quilt show, the back may be looked at as well. Neatness counts, and the regularity of stitch spacing, etc. I can nearly guarantee this will never be in a show, but it has been good practice to keep it tidy. I think it almost feels reversible at this point.

Keeping our chins up here, and sending the best to all who are weathering the storm first hand--man and beast together.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

I didn't know you had a home in Florida, Julie. My in-laws are in Naples, 7 miles from the coast, and it looks like they will get a direct hit from Irma. We have been begging them to evacuate all week but they would not listen to reason and now it looks like it is too late to get out without risking being stranded on a highway somewhere when the storm hits.

I love the stitching! I'd like to try something like that. Thanks for sharing.

It's pretty scary. I worry about all friends and acquaintances in the path of the storm. Hope your home weathers the storm...glad you aren't there! Mother Nature is very angry. Your stitching is very nice.

I'm thinking of everyone I know mostly through quilting in Florida and also loving your quilting.

I love the big stitch quilting! At least I think that's what it's called! The bright blue you used really makes those stacks of coins stand out.

We have been watching tv with bated breath . USA is such a great country , but such weather extremes . I shouldn't complain about our damp cold weather

It was hard to watch the news this weekend, it's going to be a long road to recovery. The stitching on your coins quilt is lovely. The final quilt turned out beautifully.

By now Irma has come through, so I hope that all is well with your families and friends. There's so much damage that I can barely manage watching the tv.
The quilt is coming along nicely. I discovered that I'm not a fan of big stitches, until I finally got the hang of it over the summer. I stitched in the truck while we traveled, so I'm not sure if the roughness was good for practicing. I don't think any of it is as neat as yours, but it will do for a first time.
