The Farmer's Wife 1930s: Week 1: Blocks 8,12,16


"Aunt"--It begged for a fussy cut!

The 1930's Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt Sew-along has begun, and it's exciting! There are over 4,000 members now, and the variety of blocks is wonderful to see. I am sticking to my reproduction fabrics, and throwing in some solids. Three blocks were introduced the first week, but from here on out there will be two a week. 



 "Becky"

I have several original 1930's quilts tucked away, and I've been looking over them closely to get a valid idea of what fabrics women actually used in the era. I keep seeing lots of spots, and print with print. Solids seem to have been reserved for the sashing and backgrounds. You don't have to convince me to pair prints with prints!


 "Bonnie"
I decided it would be easiest to work in color families, and eliminate pulling fat quarters out of my stack. I have been focusing on the reds, pinks, yellows, and greens here.


 "Betty"
The fabrics are absolutely my favorites, and take the edge off of having to do all the tiny piecing. 

I'm cutting this short as it's sewing at Joann's tonight. I'm bringing the coffee and cookies, and have to pack yet. See you there!

Come on, Doxie girls.

    I love your choice of fabrics - and Farmer's Wife quilts are so amazing! Will be following along with this quilt-along, and am sure I'll be totally inspired by what I see!

    Very pretty blocks! Great choice to use your '30's fabrics! I'm guessing they measure around 6" ?

    I love this, Julie. Great fabric choices, I like your colours a lot and really, really like your decision to go with lots of prints and spots - the whole thing has just the right feel about it.

    4000+ members-whoa Nelly! Great that you have some 1930s quilts to peruse while you stitch this up! I believe I saw one or two, right? These are great colour combos, and so well done, too!

    Ack! I'm already behind in my blocks (read that as: I have yet to start!). I love your approach to fabric selection. Focusing on color families makes things more manageable.
