No baby pictures here--just a new quilt in progress using "Snapshots" by Riley Blake.
I picked up a fat quarter bundle a few months back, but had no ideas for it then. When I found out two of the three babies expected this spring were girls, I knew right away.
Babies aren't little very long. Those of us who've raised a few realize they grow up in a Snap, so I wanted a girly quilt that would grow with her. I introduced some funky solids, and I think it did the trick here.
I devised a piecing pattern to give me a 9" block, and allow the center square to appear off-centered. All center squares were cut 4". I cut the smaller border of those at 1 3/4" wide and the wider strips at 2 3/4". The outside borders on all blocks were cut 2" wide.
Blocks were either print-solid-print, or solid-print-solid.
I left the last side off of all the blocks until the final layout.
I varied the two types in turn, and also the position of the missing side. Going from left to right in the picture: bottom, right side, top, left side, etc.
Then I put a contrasting strip back on each using a print to a print, and a solid to a solid.
I like the haphazard look here.
Now on to the next one!
Remember that 2 of 3 thing.
This is the other fat quarter stack I bought at the same time.
"Floriography", also by Riley Blake.
I may use the same pattern, using up my hefty supply of leftover strips.
It's almost the exact same palette.
And the last project I want to launch is an iPad
protector I promised weeks ago.
She's a bird lover, and I think she'll like these
new fabrics I found.
It's warm and dry inside.
The storm is in progress.
My bird feeders all full, and there are throngs
of feathered friends visiting today for a meal.
The Doxie Girls and I have work to do
before Downton Abbey tonight.
Come on, Doxie Girls.
Let's go sew.

So, so happy you visited me way down here because that meant that I happened upon your lovely blog! Oh my goodness, an abundance of gorgeousness! I love your baby quilt; I love the pattern you devised....so many pretty fabrics and pattern to delight the eye. Then I scrolled down to the Floriography fabrics....I am in love!! Those fabrics will make the most 'pretty as a picture' baby quilt. I can't wait to see this 'pretty'. Oh I think your iPad is going to love stepping out with you, in those lovely fabrics. What a gorgeous corner of the world you live in...love the closing photo of your wintry landscape...sublime! I can't wait to return to see what you are up to next, Julie!.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing the magic of your gorgeous quilt construction.
I'll meet you at Downton Abbey! Why are those solids so shiny??? Silk? If not, who made them? I am unfailingly attracted to shiny sparkly. The blossom stack, well, I want them all. Give em here. LeeAnna at not afraid of color
LeeAnna, I don't know actually. There are some Robert Kauffman solids, but surely a big mixture as I buy when I find them on sale. Ooo, I love calling them the "Blossom Stack!" How inventively descriptive you are!
I love the fabrics you have set aside for the iPad protector. Lovely! The color palette for the quilt is so cheery. I completely now what you mean about kids growing up quickly. You're clever to make a quilt that can grow with a child, even when they outgrow their nursery decor. Even though there are some exciting prints included, the solids help balance out the top so they don't get overwhelmed by each other.
I was hoping to see a cute baby pictured with your quilt! ;-) I'm sure the quilts will be well-loved, and I totally agree that making the quilt a little bigger ensures more use!
I like the way you designed your baby quilt and I really like all those fabrics! So true about babies growing up so fast, and I think it's great you made a quilt that can grow with the baby. :) thanks for linking up to MCM!
What a beautiful quilt - the fabrics are so fun and pretty! Those other fabrics are luscious too - just yummy :)
It's going to be a lovely quilt, the colors are fantastic!
