The Quick-i-est, Fabulous Baby Quilt!

Original Concept Post by Jen Eskridge
Based on "Huge No-Waste Flying Geese with Fat Quarters"...but My Way

A dear friend called with a quilt emergency. Could I make a super quick quilt for a baby shower in a matter of weeks? There were boxes we had to check, and one of them was a hint of something with aviation. Sure! I know something about that.

I suggested the subtle idea of a flying geese block, and that led to a search for images. Taking that a step more, I traced the image to its website, Reanna Lily Designs. Now we had the pattern idea.

The graphic bundle above, "Doe" by Friedlander was an obvious pick for a boy, and I found a scant quarter yard of something special in my stash. A perfect pairing!

I knew the binding right away. This Moda Elementary print was perfect.

There are dozens of ways to make flying geese, and I think I've tried them all. But I've come back to my 6" Flying Geese & 45/90 Triangle by Creative Grids every time. I started with the fat quarter bundle, and cut all the pieces in less than a single podcast--about 45 minutes! First you cut strips, then use the ruler to accurately cut the goose and wings in stacks of 6 layers. There was less than an inch of waste!

I didn't fuss with matching ahead of time. I grabbed 2 triangles, contrasted the wings, and sewed. Some were brilliant, and some were a little bland, but that makes it all work. It was only a few hours to piece the whole quilt. Read Jen's post for the details.

This quilt is only 40" square so it deserved a Wow! stitch design. Isn't this a great, graphic design for a boy? It's by Karlee Porter, and an HQ preload design.

Oh, such a little man, quilt!

I used a pale grey thread to blend the thread. (FYI, that's a wrinkle, not a tuck.)

Front or back, both have a great deal of visual interest.

The binding was perfect!

24 hours later the quilt was in the mail!
Isn't that just the quick-i-est ever?

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

You hit this job outta the runway! What a perfect baby quilt with an aviation twist! Flying geese, airplane fabric and all those awesome curves and lines zooming all over the quilting. Some little guy is going to love this for years and years!

Pretty darn nice quilt. Never saw that ruler before, I looked it up. Beautiful quilting, as always.

I love everything about this one -- colorful modern design that isn't too cutesy, the colors, the patchwork design AND the quilting! Great job!

I learned a new word today : quickiest. ☺ I love that the wings are all different colours. I may have to try this sometime.

What an exciting little quilt, perfect for the occasion! It’s almost as if you blinked, and there it was! But I know that, although it was a quick project, it took work to make it so. Your thoughtful quilting brought it to life and I’m sure it is very much appreciated. Well done! I’m certainly going to tuck this idea away for future consideration. Thank you for sharing, Julie.

What fun! All the elements worked out perfectly! I have a little grandson on the way soon, and so have been trying to come up with a modern quilt (that's not cutesy). I've started one, but something tells me I may have to make two. Or three? How many is too many for my first grandson?
