Civil War Sampler Blocks

New England

Civil War Sampler by Barbara Brackman

My conscience is saying, "Have you no shame?! Yet another quilt along when you have two out there hanging?" And I answer it with, "I need this! I need the adrenaline, the frenzy, the routine." And honestly, I think that's true. I crave joyful sewing right now. I need camaraderie. I want to hear and feel the struggle of other quilters moaning about a difficult block, and not thinking about the world at large for just a tiny bit!

And I love, love reproduction fabrics! I won't call these all Civil War because there's a wide range of periods I'm pulling from. Still, that's not the point of all this. There are no fabric police. Let's just enjoy it, yeah?

Can you see there are 2 oddball fabrics in my 4 patches? They had to have dropped somewhere between the studio and home, or maybe they're laying on my cutting table at work. I grabbed scrap pieces of what I had nearby at home, and used it. Those 4 patches became a little oversized, and that gave my star a rounded look. I'm okay with that, too. Actually I'm shocked it looks as good as it does after the hours of sewing I put in yesterday at work, and this was assembled in the dark hours at home.

This looks off, but it's not. It was printed off grain, and I cut it on grain. Grain is a funny thing. We need to talk about it more.

Fort Sumter

Is this my last flower of summer or fall? It's close by for sure. My anemones are blooming like crazy yet, toad lilies, and the marigolds in the garden. I've picked my last tomatoes, done my last ragu, and am starting to think about soups and comfort food. I'm taking stock of what's in the pantry more these days. Imagine how this time of year must have been in the days when these fabrics were popular. I believe it might not be so different after 150 years as we think: safety, food, health, and comfort.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

  1. I love QALs as well...the routine is comforting and keeps me focused on sewing. It's so easy to let life interfere with quilting.

  3. I do like QALs, but I'm doing two now and can't justify adding another. Although this looks like a great one. Your blocks are wonderful. Have fun.
