Hazel and Hank Hedgehogs

Hazel the Hedgehog
Pattern by Elizabeth Hartman
"Fabrics and Fibs" print by Anna Marie Horner

'Hank the Hedgehog'
So named because I'm partial to the name Hank, and
this was meant for a little boy.
Print fabric by Birch Organic

I started this project late last night after finishing up a long list of other sewing projects through the day. I knew of a little girl and boy who might really love these, but wasn't sure I could get them done in time. I started cutting out pieces to a pattern I'd never made at almost 7 p.m. My friends know I'm a morning person, and turn into a pumpkin by 8 every night. As tired as I already was, I only had one serious mistake to redo. That says a lot for the pattern. I was impressed at how straight forward it was.

I must say this is one of perhaps 2 patterns I've ever bought, and it's been on the shelf waiting for a perfect moment. I also completely blame Jayne at Twiggy and Opal for posting her adorable photos of all the hedgehogs she's made. I had to try it!

At 6 a.m. I started the straight line quilting on my dependable Pfaff. This was such a small project that I just pinned through the layers with straight pins. Did you know you can sew over pins? And through them, too!

Almost all done with both, I ran out of fabric for the binding. I popped on a strip of the fuchsia, and think it added some character. Actually, I think it might be a good and intentional trick to add in the future, too.

Tomorrow I'll give you the whole scoop on the very cute bag I made from Craftsy. Let's hope for some better weather to snap a few pictures, and then it's ready to be put to use.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

  6. I think Hazel and Hank make a very good couple. I had already fell in love with this little critters after seeing them on Jayne's page, but now seeing them on yours, I may have to break down and buy the pattern. I'm sure they will be well loved.

  12. Those turned out adorable! I've seen Jayne's, and totally want to make some. Funny, I just returned all my NP library books yesterday, and have decided I am buying Elizabeth Hartman's that I had out; it is so good! You know I never noticed the fuchsia in the binding either! Not sure on loitering in Ohio area...sniff. It will be very hard not to. As for sewing through pins, yep, been there done that, surprised the heck out of me that I did and didn't break a needle.

  13. Love. I have also made these in the 24" size and turned them into big pillows for my older 20 something kids. A well thought out pattern.
