The Farmer's Wife 1930s: Week 3: Blocks 13, 24

Belle

Week 3 of 1930's Farmer's Wife Sew-along is over, and I barely slid in on (my imposed) schedule by sewing 2 blocks Sunday afternoon. Belle, #13, and Coral, #24 were Week 3 blocks, and we encountered our first Y seam block with Belle. I was super excited, and I know a few of you are cringing, but I like Y seam sewing. No, not all the time or every seam, but it's a little bit of a challenge, and that makes things more interesting. I like to have to work at it a bit.

I think I've said this before, but it's definitely worth repeating. Mary Huey at Quilting through Rose-Colored Trifocals has a dvd called "Set In Piecing Simplified". It changed the way I think about, feel about, and do set in piecing. I felt like I rocked this block!  I used the rotary cutting method given, and cut the one irregular shape from a paper template.

Coral

Coral was a simpler block, and I cut all pieces with the rotary cutting method. I had the most fun picking out the fabrics. I used a green and orange palette this week to change things up, and include more colorways overall.

The new block will be posted later today in the EST time zone. I'll be watching for it.

I hope you all had a good weekend. I was lucky to have a few days away, and once again biked to my LFQS. I'll show you the loot another day. What is it about a couple of days away that allows us to look at things through fresh eyes? I feel like I've had my system rebooted.

I'm off to stitch with hopes you are, too. Let's catch up on Instagram so I can see your projects, too! I'm pinkdoxies or click on my sidebar icon. You can follow Pink Doxies below on Pinterest, Twitter, Bloglovin', by having each new post sent to your email box, Facebook, or Google+.

Come on, Doxie girls.
Let's go sew.

Fun blocks. I'm not sure I'll ever learn to like Y seams, but you definitely have them figured out.

Your blocks are looking wonderful, but I knew they would ;) I may be considering doing the Farmers Wife but from the first book which has sat in my bookcase unopened hahahaahah

Y seams are great when you want to preserve the wholeness of block parts. Or miter borders - love so much that they don't intimidate me any more! Two great blocks here. :)

OOH on that Y seams block, totally rocked it, and also OOH on the loot. You make me want to join in on this sew-along...green and orange takes me back to the 70s...dresses my mum made for us for the local Klondike Days festival...
