I've Moved Out & Creative Space Tag

Before I explain my exodus from the
house, let me show you my QST progress.
This was taken in my new space with only a flash.
No other photo enhancements were made,
but I finally have natural daylight.
I feel like I can see the full spectrum.
 What a difference that makes!

This quilt is going to be large. The new design wall
is 7' 7" x 8'--the dimension of 2 pieces of foam
core insulation. Each was covered with quilt
batting I found on a roll for $1.79 a yard. I
attached it with hot glue, and then actually
hot glued it to the wall. It will all peel off
if I need or want to move it. I think I
could use one more beside it, too.
Let's Dream Big!

I have one large window with light
in front of my machines.

And another here!
Both are north facing, and so I have no blinding
glare, just great afternoon light for photos.

I have a great mess, but my husband promised
to help me move my storage cubes soon. The
room was used as a gaming room when all the
kids were young. I was the mom that wouldn't
allow video games in the house. Period. This
was a way to control it. It later became a
guest room, and now my learning center/studio.

There are always a few drawbacks.
No Wifi, and there are stairs.
Imagine all the trips I made to move,
but I think it was worth it.

Why did I move?

I moved for natural light, most of all. Also, to
separate my home life from my work life. It's
becoming more real when I have to close the
door to the house, and walk 'to work'. There is
complete quiet, or I can crank up Rock music
without bothering anyone. I won't apologize for
being in the way. My house will stay much cleaner
without me dragging things up and down the stairs
to photograph. Fewer chances of pins winding up
in my husband's socks. And thankfully, it feels right.

The Doxie Girls and I are totally convinced.
It's time to Dream in Color.

I've shown you my new space roughly
done, but promise to update you
as it comes together. In the mean
time, I'm tagging my friend, Maryse,
to show us her space. We both thought
it would be fun to see the places
regular people like us create. Would
you like to be included in our game of
Creative Space Tag?

Leave me a reply below, or drop me
an email, and be sure to include your own.
Stay tuned to future posts, and I'll link
you over to Maryse Makes Things
when she's ready.

Come on, Doxie Girls.
Let's go sew.

  2. Love all your natural light. That is the one thing I am lacking in my space - which is our entire lower level... but if I could change one thing - that would be it. Congratulations on the new space, I am looking forward to seeing it come together!

  10. Congratulations on taking the plunge! I took over our living room. We always use the family room, so my husband said go for it. I know you finish it up and get great use out of it.

  15. What a fabulous new space with nice natural light. A great decision to have a separate place for work. Your quilt is also coming together very nicely and looks good on your new design wall.

  17. Julie your Creative space looks like a dream come true! All that natural light in there and so much artificial lighting too, as well as space to spread out...just fabulous! That is a clever design wall... and a design wall can never be too large. I'd move the pinball machine and cover the entire section with design wall panels. It's fun to see how people organize their spaces so I look forward to seeing how you tackle that. Yay... Maryse's next! I love Maryse! Your QST quilt is looking awesome!

  23. Your space has so much potential and terrific light! I love that you said, "walk to work" :-). In our previous home out west I had 2 styrofoam sheets over which a laid gridded flannel from Hancock's of Paducah, and hot glued to the wall. When we moved the flannel was easily removed, not so the styrofoam, but it was inexpensive. Now the flannel is pinned to the studs and vapour barrier in the (unfinished) basement corner where I sew. One day, I will have a sewing room to rival the one I used to have! Loving that quilt on your design wall.

  24. Congratulations on your new studio space! I wish I could squeeze a bigger design wall into my space but I have a sloped ceiling and only one wall that is full height without windows breaking it up. I love seeing other people's creative work spaces.

  25. I've shown my studio before but I'm always in for it again. I would love to see where all my friends work. I love the idea of going to work and closing the door on the house. Can the doxies make it down the stairs with you? And you might need a fridge or did I miss it? A mini kitchen and a bathroom for washing out paint brushes would be a plus to me.
I think most real people make a mess while working. They may or may not clean between projects but they make a mess.

  27. What a fantastic studio Julie! How big is it! Love all the light that you have and the photo of your quilt looks perfect!

  28. Super jealous of your crafting space!! Having all that room just to make creative "messes" must be freeing especially since it is away from home. Gotta have that rock music pumping and your own room to do that in is awesome.

  29. I totally understand you moving for the natural light....I don't know how people can sew in a room without it! I am planning an attic style sewing room in my new house...so it will be long and narrow like yours with stairs thrown in but I will definitely have control of where my natural light comes from....North, hey? it's also the best view here!
