Patchwork Cushion

For all you scrap lovers, this post is for you.

Here's the story of a family heirloom that no one wanted to sit on. It was too hard.

Early this morning, I started thinking about this quilted seat I wanted to make. The old chair needed vintage style fabric or something that looked old. I thought about my home decorating scrap fabrics I've had for many years. This is what I had.

This is the chair. Not a stand out against our white walls.
It was there for emergencies only. If we needed to use it, everyone scrambled Not to sit on it. It was usually mine or my husband's seat then.

I had a lot of small scraps of my heavy cotton batting left from doing chair cushions. Frugal me, I stacked them together three times, and had a nice cushion. Effy helped.

I layered thin poly batting on the top and bottom of the sandwich.

I made a muslin cover and basted it on. Not fancy.

I started with whatever scraps looked interesting, and pieced. It grew into this.
What do you think?

The dottie grosgrain ribbons you see in the first pictures up above were salvaged from a blanket I bought. The whole project was done with scraps and reused materials.

Here are 7 finished chairs all ready for Thanksgiving.
Guess who's sitting on the soft white one this year?

Come on, Doxie Girls.
Let's go clean up the sewing room.
And then maybe we'll have a little time to sew something.

Wow! You are one 'scrappy lady'.......I love the covered pillow for your old chair! The balance of yellow, blue and having the striped edges around make it adorable! You continue to inspire me!

Thank you, Irene. It was fun to do, and I didn't think too much about the outcome while I was piecing it. The most fun part about scrappin', though, is you remember each of the projects you made with the fabrics. One of those pieces is from the 70's or 80's when friends of my parents owned a decorating store, and we used to get some of the cast offs from their swatch catalogs. Now I'm excited to use some of the pieces I have left in other palettes. It's fun when it works.
